Richard Lipps (born October 26, 1857 in Berlin , † October 9, 1926 in Starnberg ) was a German landscape and architecture painter .

Life

Richard Lipps studied mechanical engineering and worked as a technician for a few years before he decided to work as a painter. He studied painting at the art academies in Dresden , Düsseldorf and Munich . He attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1880 to 1882. Hugo Crola , Heinrich Lauenstein and Peter Janssen the Elder were his teachers there. He was later appointed professor in Munich.

After graduating, he settled in Munich in 1885 and later lived in Starnberg. He visited Austria and Italy several times, especially Venice. He often visited the artists' colony in Kallmünz . In addition to oil painting, Richard Lipps also created works in watercolor. His painting is assigned to the Munich School of the 1900s .

Lipps 'thesis at the art academy was a copy of Jan Vermeer' s picture : The letter reader at the open window. He was unmarried all his life, his sister Käthe, who was one year younger than him, took care of his household. His nephew was the later philosophy professor Hans Lipps , whom he adopted shortly before his death. His house, which he decorated with numerous carvings, as well as his diaries are still in family ownership.
