Richard Rümelin

Richard Karl Alexander Gustav Rümelin (born August 14, 1818 in Besigheim , † June 29, 1880 ) was a German banker . He was chairman of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce from 1860 to 1871 and was a member of the Heilbronn municipal council for six years .

Life

Rümelin was born in Besigheim, where his father, Ernst Gustav von Rümelin, was senior administrator . His mother Henriette Dreiß (1790–1865) was a merchant's daughter from Heilbronn. He had four siblings, including Eugen Gustav Rümelin (1812–1899), Gustav von Rümelin (1815–1889), who was a member, minister and chancellor of the University of Tübingen, and Max Rümelin (1823–1893).

After his father was transferred to Heilbronn, Richard Rümelin went to school and apprenticeship there. With his younger brother Max, he opened a grocery store and forwarding . Since the forwarder's business deteriorated after the arrival of the railway, Richard and Max Rümelin looked for new business areas. In 1856 they founded the Heilbronn bank Rümelin & Co., which developed well and soon had customers in large parts of Württemberg .

Even before the bank was founded, Rümelin was appointed a member of the newly founded Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce in 1855 . After its chairman Adolf von Goppel resigned, the chairmanship was transferred to Richard Rümelin in 1859, who held it until 1871. From 1859 to 1865 he was also a member of the Heilbronn municipal council . By 1874 at the latest, Rümelin was given the title of Commerce Councilor .

family

Rümelin's wife Christiane "Nanette" Auguste Johanna Cloß (1819–1902), whom he married in August 1842, was the daughter of the wealthy Winnend merchant Johann Friedrich Closs. Her brother Friedrich Closs was an important Heilbronn merchant, her sister Wilhelmine married the Heilbronn doctor Robert Mayer , and another sister, Johanna, was the mother of the later Mayor of Heilbronn, Paul Hegelmaier . The marriage had ten children, four of whom died early. The son Ernst died in 1883 just three years after his father. Two other sons, Hugo von Rümelin (1851-1932) and Richard Rümelin (1855-1923), were then co-owners and managing directors of the banking house Rümelin & Co. Hugo von Rümelin later also became president of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce.
