R. Stephen Berry

Richard Stephen Berry (born April 9, 1931 in Denver , Colorado , † July 26, 2020 in Chicago ) was an American chemist and professor of physical chemistry .

life and work

Berry studied at Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in 1956 with William E. Moffitt. From 1957 to 1960 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Michigan , then at Yale University as an assistant professor. From 1964 he was a professor at the University of Chicago , where he was most recently James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus. He also served as Special Advisor to the Director for National Security at Argonne National Laboratory .

From 1999 to 2003 he was Executive Director of the United States National Academy of Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1980. Berry has received numerous prizes and awards, including the election of Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , Member of the American Philosophical Society , and Foreign Member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences . He received the Senior Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Newton-Abraham Professor from Oxford University. In 1983 he was a MacArthur Fellow .

The main focus of his work was the investigation of the structure, behavior and dynamics of clusters and biopolymers. He was also known for his work on pseudorotation . Berry published about 500 scientific papers.
