Richard Thompson (born June 7, 1985 in Port of Spain ) is a sprinter from Trinidad and Tobago . He is a two-time Olympic athlete (2008, 2012).
Career
In 2004 Richard Thompson left his home and enrolled at Louisiana State University , for whose sports team he was successful in the following years. In 2007 he started in the 100-meter run of the World Championships in Osaka , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Olympic Games 2008
In 2008 he won the NCAA championships indoors over 60 meters and outdoors over 100 meters.
At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he won the silver medal over 100 meters in his personal best of 9.89 s. With the 4 x 100 meter relay, he finished second behind Jamaica in a time of 38.06 s, and because of their subsequent disqualification, the relay has been ranked first in front of Japan's relay since 2017. At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , Thompson was fifth, with the relay he won the silver medal.
In 2011 he improved his 100 meter best time to 9.85 s. At the World Championships in Daegu , however, he was eliminated in the semifinals, with the relay he finished sixth.
Olympic Games 2012
As part of the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Thompson reached the final in the 100-meter run. With 9.98 s, he finished seventh. He was more successful with the relay, with which he won the bronze medal. Due to a positive doping test at Tyson Gay , the relay was subsequently awarded the silver medal in May 2015.
