Life

He had previously studied in Heidelberg , Munich and Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1929 with a thesis entitled: Censorship and Press Supervision in Leipzig, 1830-1848: with an overview of the simultaneous Saxon press legislation, Leipzig 1930 . With the centralization of the rectorate archives with the individual faculty archives at the University of Leipzig to the University Archive of Leipzig . In 1934 Richard Walter Franke filled the post of university archivist in Leipzig for the first time on October 1, 1934.

In 1937 Franke began to take precautions to protect the stocks from possible air raids. At his suggestion, the particularly valuable holdings were moved to the bomb-proof basement rooms of the Augusteum . After the war, several professors voted for his reinstatement, even though he was previously a member of the NSDAP and therefore could not remain in his post for political reasons. First he was employed on a voluntary basis in 1947 by the rector Hans-Georg Gadamer in order to ensure that the university archives were taken care of again. However, the destruction of the buildings above the cellars made it impossible to quickly utilize the existing buildings. Although the most valuable holdings had also been relocated to the surrounding area as a precaution, most of them were brought to the Soviet Union as looted goods , which only returned to Leipzig in 1958.

First he was temporarily employed as a university archivist for six months from October 1948 to April 1949. In June 1949 he handed over the official business to Karlheinz Blaschke , who began to relocate the archive holdings. Blaschke had not succeeded Frankes because he had taken part in a course at the archive school in Potsdam . A permanent position in Franke was finally refused in 1950. Renate Drucker was his definitive successor .
