action

The young teacher Anna Taylor wakes up after a serious car accident in a morgue where she is being prepared for the funeral service by the undertaker Eliot Deacon. Anna explains to Eliot that she is still alive. However, he replies that she is really dead and can only talk to him because he has the special gift of speaking to the dead. However, Anna does not believe him and tries several times to escape from the morgue.

Anna's fiancé Paul would like to say goodbye to the allegedly deceased, which Eliot, pointing out that he is not a relative, is denied. Paul has doubts about her death after Jack, a student of Anna, tells him that he saw her through the window in Eliot's house. But again Eliot denies him entry. Anna accepts her fate, but then she sees herself in a mirror. She notices that the mirror is fogging up from her breath. Once again she is convinced that she is still alive. Eliot, however, injects her with a drug that is used both for the preparation of corpses and can cause the living to appear to be dead . Anna is finally buried. She comes to in the coffin, but the gravedigger does not hear her shouting while shoveling the grave.

At the subsequent reception in honor of the supposedly dead, Paul gets drunk and confronts Eliot. This indicates that Anna might still be alive and provokes Paul to drive to the cemetery drunk and at excessive speed. He arrives there, digs the coffin free and saves Anna. But a little later he comes to in the same morgue, where Eliot tells him that he was killed in an accident while driving to the cemetery. Eliot sticks a trocar into Paul's chest cavity , killing him this way.

The film leaves open whether Anna and Paul are actually dead or whether Eliot is playing this to them and is actually a murderer.

Reviews

According to Cinema , After.Life is a “mystery shocker with a strong cast with Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson, who makes too much effort to be mysterious.” Rotten Tomatoes also rates the film with only 27% and certifies it to be “an interesting premise and admirable ambition”, however he doesn't offer enough "twists or thrills to keep up his creepy atmosphere."

The lexicon of international films says: “Mystery thriller, which quickly runs out of ideas after the interesting initial situation. The intense play of the main actors and a solid staging alleviate the narrative weaknesses somewhat. "
