Rick Master is an amateur detective and journalist for the Paris daily La Rafale . Through his work and his friendship with Inspector Bourdon, he is repeatedly involved in mysterious criminal cases in which elements of the supernatural ( werewolves , vampires , return from the dead) sometimes play a role. However, mysterious processes always find a natural explanation.

Rick Master's trademarks are his clothing: trench coat, turtleneck sweater (initially yellow, then blue, finally red), blue trousers and black and white patterned jacket. In addition, he always drives a yellow (only a red in volume 6) sports car: in the first two volumes a MG A Roadster (1955) , later a Porsche 356 Cabriolet (1955) , Volvo P1800 (1961) , Porsche 911 Targa (1965) , Porsche 911 Coupé (1970) , Porsche 911 Targa (1975) , Porsche 911 Turbo (1974) , Porsche 911 Turbo (1993) and Porsche 911 Carrera (2004) . Volume 18 flashes back to 1938. Richard, Rick Master's father and also a detective, not only looks astonishingly similar to him, but also wears identical clothes and drives a red MG-TA Roadster .

Other characters that appear frequently in the volumes are Bourdon's niece and Rick Master's girlfriend Nadine, Bourdon's assistant Inspector Ledru, Rick Master's colleague Bob Drumont and the idiosyncratic Professor Ermine. A common opponent is the hangman.

Although Rick Master and the other characters do not age noticeably, the series has always adapted to current events in 40 years and this includes, for example, the frequent vehicle changes. These are usually justified by the fact that the car ended up in a ditch during a chase at the end of the previous volume or fell off a cliff.

Publications

In the French-language original, Ric Hochet originally appeared in Tintin . In Germany the series was published from 1967 to 1971 in the magazine MV-Comix of the Ehapa publishing company (as Ric, der Meisterdetektiv or Ric Vitess ) and from 1972 to 1979 by Koralle in ZACK and its offshoots, from 1978 to 1981 also as independent album series (the first Koralle album by Rick Master appeared in the series ZACK Album (there as volume 17) and was subsequently counted as volume 1 of the series). After Koralle ceased its comic strip activities, the series was first published by Bastei in the form of albums and paperbacks under the title "RICK", with the subtitle "Rick Hochet against the Underworld" going back to the original title (Bastei also published two illustrated prose- Novels, but then under the coral title Rick Master ). The first chronological German edition then started in the 1980s by Carlsen Verlag . It ran there up to volume 25 as a softcover and was continued by the publishing house Kult Editions in hardcover from volume 26, with volume 25 being reissued there later. This edition ran until 2015. The new adventures will be published by Splitter-Verlag from 2017 (including a new edition of Volume 1) after they have been printed in advance in the ZACK magazine .

Trivia

In the French original, Ric's name is a play on words. His full name refers to "Ricochet" , the term " ricochet" based on the verb ricocher (= bounce) , a very dynamic process.
