Rico Kubat
Rico Kubat (born September 19, 1971 ) is a former German boxer . He was vice European champion in 1993 in the flyweight division.
Career
Rico Kubat started boxing as a teenager. After his first major successes in the national field, the athlete, who is 1.70 meters tall for a flyweight, became a member of the Cottbus sports club . Dietmar Schnieber was his trainer there. The motorcycle fan was a vehicle mechanic by profession. After German reunification, Rico Kubat moved to TSV 04 Bayer Leverkusen in 1991 , where Fritz Sdunek was his coach.
At the age of 17, Rico Kubat became East German paperweight champion in 1988 with a points win over Mario Loch (3: 2). He repeated this success in 1989 in the flyweight division with a point victory over Myrko Schade (19: 5). In 1989 he was at the Junior World Championships in Bayamon / Puerto Rico with victories over Hector Barrientos, Cuba (36:24) a. Narcisio Gonzalez, Mexico (24: 6) and a narrow point defeat in the final against Daniel Petrow from Bulgaria (21:23) vice world champion .
He achieved excellent results in 1990. He was the flyweight winner at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) , beating Li Gwang Sik from North Korea on points (33:21). In an AIBA Challenge match in Berlin , he won over the 1986 world champion and 1989 vice world champion Pedro Orlando Reyes from Cuba, clearly on points (47:27). Finally he was also the tournament winner at the 6th World Cup in Dublin . He defeated Paul Wills from Australia (31: 9), Krasimir Cholakow from Bulgaria (37:13) and István Kovács from Hungary (27:22) on points.
Rico Kubat was injured so badly at the beginning of 1991 that he was out for the whole season. In 1992 he recovered and caused a sensation at the German championship when he knocked out ex-European champion and Olympic starter in 1992 Dieter Berg in the second round in the bantamweight final . These championships did not take place until after the Olympic Games in Barcelona , for which Rico Kubat had not been able to qualify because he lost the fight against Mario Loch on points in the flyweight chemistry cup in Halle, which was the official elimination match for the Olympic Games ( 3:13).
In 1993 he was then used at the European Flyweight Championships in Bursa . He was able to fully convince there and fought his way through to the final battle with a point win over Crinu Raicu Olteanu from Romania (23: 6), a non-fighting victory over György Farkas from Hungary and a point win over Wladislaw Nayman from Israel (10: 4). In this he lost to Rowshan Huseinow from Azerbaijan on points (4: 7) and thus received the European Championship silver medal .
After that, things calmed down around Rico Kubat. In 1994 he boxed in the season of TSV 04 Bayer Leverkusen at the German team championship, but did not contest any more championships.
