Dieter Berg (born June 11, 1966 in Hagenow ) is a former German boxer . He was the 1985 European flyweight champion of amateurs.

Career

Dieter Berg started boxing in 1976 at the age of ten. He already achieved many successes in the youth field and was therefore delegated to the top club SC Traktor Schwerin . Excellent prepared by the local head coach Otto Ramin, he soon achieved great successes in the junior and senior division.

As early as 1984, at the age of 18, he was the first GDR flyweight champion with a points win over his club colleague Mike Knuth. In the same year he also won his first international title, the European junior flyweight champion. He won in Tampere over Timo Matilainen from Finland on points (5: 0 judges' votes), over Amangeldi Akscholakow from the USSR by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Zenko Mutic from Yugoslavia on points (5: 0).

Also in 1985 he won the GDR championship in flyweight. He defeated Gunnar Lexow from Frankfurt (Oder) on points in the final battle and also won the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) , which is important for GDR boxers, ahead of René Breitbarth , who was unable to compete against him in the final due to an injury and secured himself thus the starting place at the European Championship 1985 in Budapest . In Budapest he won the flyweight against Naser Rusidi, Yugoslavia (5-0), John Lyon, England (5-0), Krasimir Cholakow from Bulgaria (5-0) and Andrea Mannai from Italy (5-0), making him newer European champion . It is noteworthy that in his four fights he got all the votes of the judges, which was very rare at the time. At the end of 1985 Dieter Berg took an excellent 2nd place at the flyweight World Cup in Seoul , where he had to admit defeat on points to the Venezuelan Jose Rincone after two victorious fights in the final .

In 1986 Dieter Berg defeated his club colleague Andreas Tews on points (4: 1 judges' votes) in the GDR flyweight championship and thus won his third GDR championship title. At the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) he suffered a bitter demolition defeat in the first round in the final fight against Pedro Orlando Reyes from Cuba . Reyes soon became world flyweight champion in Reno . Dieter Berg also started at this world championship. He won his first fight against Miloud el-Mouchi from Morocco on points (5: 0), was controversial but also disappointing on points (2: 3 judges' votes) in the quarter-finals against Eyup Can from Turkey . He finished 5th at this world championship.

In 1987 Dieter Berg was defeated in the final of the Chemistry Cup against Andreas Tews on points (1: 4), who was then preferred to him at the European Championship and other international competitions. As a result, he missed participation in the Olympic Games in Seoul . In 1988, Dieter Berg won the points over Heiko Hinz (5-0) and was East German flyweight champion for the fourth time.

In 1989 he won the final battle of the chemistry cup in bantamweight again against Heiko Hinz on points (5-0). He was then used at the European Championships in Athens in this weight class. There he beat Roy Nash from Ireland (5-0) and Vedat Tutuk from Turkey (5-0). In the semifinals he was defeated by Timofei Scriabin from the USSR on points (1: 4) and won an EM bronze medal . In 1989 the world championship for amateurs with Dieter Berg in bantamweight took place in Moscow . He won there first over Ali el-Shakari from Egypt (20: 7) on points and then successfully took revenge for the defeat at the European Championship with a point win (12:10) over Timofei Scriabin. In the quarter-finals he was defeated by the agile and powerful North Korean Lin Yon Ho by just under points (13:15), which meant that he was eliminated and, as in 1986, he finished 5th.

In 1990 Dieter Berg had to undergo meniscus surgery and was therefore unable to work for a long time. After German reunification, Dieter Berg stayed in Schwerin and boxed for Schwerin SC . In 1991 he became the first German bantamweight champion with a points victory over junior world champion Kai Pielert . His point victory at the TSC tournament in Berlin over the Bulgarian Aleksandar Christow (11: 5), European bantamweight champion from 1987, while he lost in the final against Serafim Todorow from Bulgaria, the European bantamweight champion from 1989 and 1991 in bantamweight, was also remarkable ( 10:17). Dieter Berg was then used in 1991 at the bantamweight championship in Sydney . But he was already defeated there in the preliminary round against Dugarbaatar Lhagwa from Mongolia and only reached 17th place.

In 1992 he then managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Barcelona that year with a bantamweight tournament victory at the Chemistry Cup . In the final of this tournament he defeated the Irishman Wayne McCullough just on points (9: 8). The Olympic Games in Barcelona were of course disappointing for Dieter Berg, because he lost his first preliminary round match against Mohamed Achik from Morocco on points (0: 3), which again only took him 17th place. At the end of 1992 another bitter disappointment came to him, because he lost the final battle for the German bantamweight championship against Rico Kubat by knockout in the 2nd round.

Well recovered from these setbacks, Dieter Berg secured the German bantamweight championship title again in 1993 with a points victory over Dirk Krüger . His resignation from competitive sport, which he justified by saying that 17 years of competitive sport was enough, came as a bit of a surprise.

Dieter Berg opened the restaurant "Olympia" in Schwerin in 1995, which he still runs today (2009) and which has developed into a Mecca for sports fans, especially boxing fans and former and active Schwerin boxers.

In 1986 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in the GDR .
