The Rif is a large high sand in the Wadden Sea of the North Sea near Schiermonnikoog .

The sandbar is about 1.5 meters above sea level , and dune formation has been taking place for several years. The island was created by diking the Lauwerszee in 1969. As a result, less water comes through the sea channel between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, which leads to siltation . As a result, the west beach of Schiermonnikoog became larger and a sandbank was created, this was called The Reef . In the 1990s it was a desert sand plate with no vegetation. In 2004 the Queller was able to establish itself in some areas. In 2012 the Gatt silted up between Engelsmanplaat and Rif, the middle of the dunes on the island was estimated at 2.3 meters.

The sandbar serves as a breeding area. Entry is prohibited in the breeding season, from May to August. The island is also a popular resting place for seals .
