The Rifugio Franco Chiarella all'Amianthe (often just Rifugio Chiarella) is a refuge in the Aosta Valley in the Valais Alps . It is located at an altitude of 2979  m in the Valpelline side valley in the Amianthe district within the municipality of Ollomont . The hut is open from the beginning of July to the end of August and offers sleeping places for 36 mountaineers during this time.

From the hut, which lies well above the small Conca di By plain , you have a beautiful view of Mont Vélan , Grivola , Gran Paradiso , Monte Emilius and Punta Tersiva .

Ascent

The ascent to the hut begins in the district of Glassier ( 1560  m ) very close to Ollomont and leads along the path marked with the number 4 first to Balme and then to the 2167  m high Lago di By. This small lake lies in a depression called Conca di By, which appears almost flat.

From the lake, climb slowly towards the La Tza de Commune alpine pasture . Shortly afterwards, the terrain becomes significantly steeper. From an altitude of about 2900  m you reach the via ferrata Via Ferrata de Rifugio all'Amianthe that is secured by steel cables and chains.

history

The refuge was inaugurated for the first time in 1912. The version of the hut known today was created in 1975. It is named after Franco Chiarella (died 1908), a painter from Chiavari.
