Rikuo Ueda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rikuo Ueda ( Japanese ウ エ ダ リ ク オ , Ueda Rikuo ; * 1950 in Osaka Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese contemporary artist who uses the wind to create drawings worldwide . His works are accordingly referred to as wind drawings. The first work of this kind was made in Denmark in 1997.

At the beginning of every wind drawing there is the conception and implementation of a device made mainly of natural materials such as branches , stones and cord. Ueda attaches one or more writing implements such as ballpoint pens or wax pencils , occasionally cotton wool dipped in ink or twigs with ripe berries to a slightly movable part of this construction . Scooped paper of different formats usually serves as a drawing surface. With the help of these devices, the artist creates the framework for the creation of his work; the actual physical act of drawing is then always carried out by the wind. The duration of the drawing process is not limited in advance. The traces that the wind leaves on the drawing surface with the help of the writing instruments give expression to its unique character. The drawing results are unpredictable and vary depending on the selected location and time of year .
