Rincón is a German - Cuban documentary by director Cornelius Griep from 2005 about religious syncretism in Cuba.
action
For decades, since the proclamation of the socialist character of the revolution in April 1961, the Cuban population lived under the stigma of the Stalinist interpretation of Marxist-Leninist philosophy, which had distanced many Cubans from religion. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country's mythical-religious past, in view of the lack of basic material supplies, made it possible to reassess certain traditions that had apparently been forgotten by repeated, inviolable state propaganda. An example of the popularity of the Afro-Cuban religions today, especially the Santería , is the pilgrimage to Rincón , a small village south of Havana near Santiago de las Vegas. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans, partly on their knees or scourged with stones, made a pilgrimage to the altar of the Catholic church located there in the days around December 17 to ask Saint Lazarus (San Lázaro) or his counterpart in the Afro-Cuban Santería religion Babalú Ayé for the Thank you for fulfilling their wishes. The film shows how the gods of the animistic African religions Shangó, Oshún and Yemayá are merged with the saints Santa Barbara, Caridad de Cobre and Virgen de Regla from the Catholic pantheon and that there is no strict separation in Cuba, as is common in Western Christian practice between ritual and profane moments.
