The ring wall of Oersdorf , also known as the Stonehenge of the Stader Geest , is a rampart on the edge of a high moor near Oersdorf , a district of the municipality of Ahlerstedt in the Stade district ( Lower Saxony ). The ring wall is close to the Twiste and has a diameter of approx. 185 m. The facility is approximately 2.5 hectares.

Description and age

The wall was built from Heidesode and fortified with stones. There was a large ditch in front of the wall. There was another trench inside the complex.

The complex was initially interpreted as a castle. After it was found that the wall was interrupted in four places, it is assumed that it could have been a place of worship .

In 2012 it was found out through pollen analysis that pollen in the ditch of the plant was mainly from alder , oak and hazel bush , which indicates an origin from approx. 7000 to 4000 BC. Suggests. The C14 method was used to find out that peat formed at the bottom of the ditch in the pre-Roman Iron Age .

Research history

The residents of the area had attributed the complex to Isern Hinnerk , who lived in the 14th century.

The facility was first described in the 1920s by the teacher and local history researcher Willi Wegewitz . Wegewitz assumed that the facility was laid out by the Saxons during the Saxon War against Charlemagne . After the Second World War , the monument conservator Alfred Cassau examined the complex. At that time the wall was approx. 60 cm high and three meters wide.

Part of the complex was completely plowed under in 1949 and the rest of the complex was also partially cultivated.

In 2011, scientists from HafenCity University Hamburg measured the system with a laser scanner. Geomagnetic prospecting also took place. A settlement site from the Neolithic Age was found 200 m from the complex . In 2012, an area of 200 m² was excavated.
