It crosses the country from northeast to southwest and is dammed in the middle of the country east of Paso de los Toros to the 1,140 km² lake Rincón del Bonete . The river is the main tributary of the Uruguay River . Its source is near the city of Bagé in Brazil . It flows into the Uruguay River southwest of Mercedes after having covered a distance of 750 km. The main tributaries are the Río Tacuarembó from the right and the Río Yí from the left .
The river divides Uruguay into a northern part with six departments and a southern, more densely populated and more developed part with 13 departments. In addition to making a significant contribution to the country's water supply, it also provides a large part of the electrical energy required in the country.
