The River Calder is a watercourse in Cumbria , England . It rises north of Whoap and south of Ennerdale Water in the Lake District . It first flows west before turning south east of the Blakeley Raise . It crosses the Sellafield nuclear facility from north to south and flows into the Irish Sea in an estuary with the River Ehen and the Newmill Beck .

A 150 m section of the River Calder is a Site of Special Scientific Interest . The section is located at the Kinniside Common south of Ennderdale Bridge . ( 54 ° 29 '30 "  N , 3 ° 26' 20"  W ) In outcroppings here let fossils from the Tremadocian notice from those clearly elsewhere in the UK differ .
