Rivière Mégiscane is one of the most important rivers in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue administrative region in the Canadian province of Québec . The river is known for its sturgeon .

geography

The river has its origin west of the Gouin reservoir in the administrative region of Mauricie . It flows through the 41 km² Lac Mégiscane , flows west to Lac Parent not far from Senneterre . The course of the river stretches for 230 km.

Toponymy

Its name is derived from the Algonquin language and means "fish hook", which could refer to its abundance of fish.

Use of hydropower

In 1951, the Québec government approved a partial diversion of the Riviere Mégiscane river to the Rivière Saint-Maurice for hydropower purposes . The bypass dam was completed in 1954 in the municipality of La Tuque in Mauricie. With the help of another dam and a canal, water is now being fed to the Gouin reservoir and thus to the hydropower plants on the Rivière Saint-Maurice.
