Robert-Ambroise-Marie Carré

Robert-Ambroise-Marie Carré OP (born July 25, 1908 in Fleury-les-Aubrais , Département Loiret , † January 15, 2004 in Ancourt , Département Seine-Maritime ) was a Catholic clergyman of the Dominicans who became a member of the Académie française in 1975 .

Life

After attending the École Saint-Joseph and the Collège Sainte-Croix de Neuilly, he joined the Dominican Order in 1926 and received ordination as a priest in 1933 .

From 1936 to 1939 he was editor-in-chief of the Christian magazine Revue de Jeunes . During the occupation of France by the Wehrmacht in World War II , he was a member of the Resistance in the resistance against the occupying power. He organized the protection of people regardless of religion and race and was awarded the Croix de guerre and a member of the Legion of Honor .

After the end of the war, he led numerous spiritual conferences (retreats) in France, but also in Belgium , the Netherlands , Switzerland and Italy . After 1948 during Lent for the first time in the cathedral of Montreal had preached, he spoke several times in Canada and the United States . Between 1947 and 1959 he was chaplain at the Catholic Union for Theater and Music, before he was then from 1959 to 1966 a preacher at the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral , where he held and organized sermons on Lent in particular. Another task was the pastoral care of artists, especially actors. In 1964 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. called to preach the spiritual retreat in Lent in the Vatican . Most recently, Carré has been a preacher in numerous masses broadcast by France Culture since 1966 , with many of these sermons such as Le Prêtre, homme de la Parole, Dialogue des croyants et des incroyants, Sainte Thérèse de Lisieux et l'enfance spirituelle appearing on records .

On June 26, 1975, he was finally elected to succeed Jean Cardinal Daniélou as a member of the Académie française , where he took the 37th armchair (Fauteuil 37). Carré was also a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, Knight of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Knight of the Order of Leopold II of Belgium .
