Robert Adams (born October 5, 1917 in Northampton , Great Britain , † April 5, 1984 in Great Maplestead , Essex ) was a British sculptor , graphic artist and draftsman . He was one of the most important representatives of the British avant-garde of sculpture after the Second World War .

Robert Adams studied art at the Northampton School of Art in evening classes from 1937 to 1946 . During this time he financed his living with numerous jobs. In 1947 he had his first solo exhibition at the Gimpel Fils gallery in London , where he exhibited regularly in the 1950s. Adams was an important member of the post-war abstract art circle in England, which included Victor Pasmore , Kenneth Martin and Mary Martin , Adrian Heath , Roger Hilton , Terry Frost , Anthony Hill and William Scott , among others .

Adams gained international reputation as one of Britain's most important abstract sculptors, working with wood, brass and stone. From 1949 to 1961 he taught industrial design and sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design in London.
