career
society
VfR 07 Schweinfurt
Robert Bernard started his football career at VfR 07 Schweinfurt . In 1938/39 he was promoted to the Gauliga Bayern. The dominant local rival 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 played a good role there for years. In the Tschammer Cup of 1940, the lawn athletes defeated the favored green-whites with 4-2 goals on July 7th and made it to the second main round of the competition. In the 2-1 home win in the first cup main round against Mülheimer SV 06 , Bernard stood out with the winning goal in extra time. Even Robert Bernard could not stand up to the attacking power of Rapid Vienna on September 18. With goals 1: 7, the cup adventure came to an end for VfR after goals from Franz Binder , Hans Pesser and Georg Schors . During the Second World War , Bernard was a member of the popular Paris soldier elf.
1. FC Schweinfurt 05
After the end of World War II and the beginning of league football in southern Germany, Robert Bernard joined 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 . At the side of Albin Kitzinger and Andreas Kupfer , he played 126 games in the South Football League from 1946 to 1951 , scoring 17 goals. The father of the later national goalkeeper Günter Bernard still played football in the Oberliga Süd when he was 37 years old. With the game on October 22, 1950 in Nuremberg, the club won 4-2 goals, Robert Bernard ended his playing career.
Selection teams
German national soccer team
In preparation for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Reich trainer Otto Nerz conducted a course with five games against the English professional team of Everton in early May 1936 . Robert Bernard made two appearances: on May 9th in Hamburg in the 2-0 defeat and on May 24th in Nuremberg in the 1-1 draw. In both matches he played on the outside runner position. With his performance he played his way into the three-week course that took place in July. The following runners were then nominated for the 22 squad: Ludwig Goldbrunner , Rudolf Gramlich , Paul Janes , Paul Mehl , Wilhelm Sold and Robert Bernard.
As part of the Olympic Games, the Schweinfurt player made his debut in the German national team's opening game against Luxembourg on August 4th in the national team. After the high 9-0 victory, he was also in the team that sensationally eliminated from the tournament on August 7th against Norway with 0-2 goals. He was subsequently no longer appointed to any further international appearances. On May 12, 1937, however, the three Schweinfurters Andreas Kupfer, Robert Bernard and Albin Kitzinger formed the runner-up in the national team's friendly against Manchester City . This game took place four days before the "hour of birth" of the Breslau-Elf on May 16, 1937. In the 3-2 victory of a Germany selection against Manchester City on May 22, 1937, Bernard was back in action.
District selection Bavaria
Three years after his debut in the national team, the 26-year-old from Schweinfurt was also appointed to the Bavarian regional selection. In the competition of the Reichsbund Cup of the 1939/40 round, he made his debut in the right defender position on December 3, 1939 in Munich when playing against Württemberg. Bayern won 3-0 goals and on January 14, 1940 in Frankfurt am Main also prevailed 2-1 against southwest Germany. In the semi-final game against Ostmark, Bayern had a home advantage and won 2-0 goals in Munich on May 19, 1940, making it into the final. In both games, Robert Bernard was a right defender in action. The final was played on June 30, 1940 in Augsburg against Saxony. The Bavarian team around captain Ludwig Goldbrunner won the association cup with 3-1 goals. Bernard's opponent on the Saxon side, left winger Willi Arlt , managed to equalize 1: 1 in the 69th minute of the game, but Bayern won the trophy. After successes over Lower Saxony, East Prussia and southwest Germany, defending champion Bavaria and Robert Bernard once again entered the final of the 1941 Reichsbund Cup. As captain, he led the representation from Bavaria in Chemnitz on September 7, 1941, on the field against the challenger Saxony. The Dresdner SC , reinforced by Lothar Richter from Chemnitz BC and Ernst Willimowski PSV Chemnitz, but won the game with 2: 0 goals.
