Robert Bodley took part in the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 and in Antwerp in 1920 . In 1912 he took part in a total of five competitions, two with the free rifle and three with the army rifle. While he only took back places in the individual competitions, he placed sixth in the team competitions with the free rifle and fourth with the army rifle. Eight years later, Bodley participated in seven competitions, but only in one individual competition, in which his final result is not known. With the South African teams, he mostly missed a top placement, most of the competitions the South Africans finished in the middle of all participants. An exception was the competition with the army rifle in the prone position over 600 m, in which the South African team as well as the US and Swedish teams scored 287 points, which resulted in a jump-off for the three medal places. Bodley was the team's best shooter with 59 points. In the first round of the jump-off, the Swedes only got 275 points, while the Americans and South Africans were again tied with 283 points. In the second jump-off, the US team finally prevailed, scoring 284 points. The South African team only managed 279 points, so Bodley and his teammates Ferdinand Buchanan , George Harvey , Frederick Morgan and David Smith won the silver medal.

Robert Bodley was one of the bodyguards of the British Commander in Chief Lord Roberts during the Second Boer War . In 1906 he joined the 5th Mounted Rifles , where he quickly built a reputation as a sniper. In the 1940s he was active in sniper training with the South African army , where he held the rank of colonel .
