Knes Alexander Alexejewitsch Wassiltschikow ( Russian : Васильчиков, Александр Алексеевич; September 18, 1833 jul. / September 30,  1832 greg. In Moscow ; † April 29 jul. / May 11,  1890 greg. In Korallowo ( Moscow Oblast )) was a Russian boyar , art collector and director of the Imperial Hermitage in Saint Petersburg .

Alexander Alexejewitsch grew up in an aristocratic family. His parents ran a literary salon in Moscow and organized social evenings for the Moscow nobility . He obtained his Abitur at the 1st Moscow High School, after which he studied at the former Faculty of History and Philosophy of Moscow University . After graduating, he began working in the Foreign Ministry , which was followed by assignments to the Russian mission in Rome and then to the embassy in Karlsruhe ( Kingdom of Württemberg ). In 1871 he bought the Korallovo estate near Moscow for his family and began rebuilding it. From 1879 to 1889 he was director of the Imperial Hermitage and at the same time chairman of the Archaeological Commission from 1882 to 1886. As director of the Hermitage, he developed a particular ambition in the procurement of art objects, while he was able to fall back on his experience in Rome and Württemberg. He succeeded in acquiring a remarkable collection of applied arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with the help of Alexander Petrovich Basilewski in Paris, which was later acquired by Alexander III. was acquired. AA Wassiltschikow created an extensive collection of weapons and invited world-famous scientists such as the Egyptologist Wladimir Semjonowitsch Golenishchev , the art historian Nikodim Pavlovich Kondakow and the art scholar and connoisseur of Byzantine art Andrei Ivanovich Somow to scientific work. Archaeologist GE Kizeritsky compiled a catalog of the items in the antiques department.

In 1886, Vasilchikov got into financial difficulties, he was unable to meet his obligations to his creditors , and in particular to the Moscow State Bank. This situation eventually led to Vasilchikov by decree one for his property and finances guardian received which is the method of repayment of debt cared.

Origin and family

Alexander Alexejewitsch Wassiltschikow came from the respected boyar family of the Wassilschikows . His parents were the Senator Alexei Wassiljewitsch Wassiltschikow (1776-1854) and Alexandra Ivanovna Arkharowa (1795-1855). In 1858 he married Countess Olga Vasiljewna Olsufiewa (1835–1915), the daughter of Moscow governor Vasily Dmitriwitsch Olsufiew (1796–1858) in Paris . Her descendants were: Maria (* 5th?? 1859; † 1934 in Rome); Alexandra (1860-1927) ∞ LA Miloradowitch; Alexey (1862–1900), Pawel (1865–1941), Peter (1867–1879). After the October Revolution in 1917 they all emigrated to the West.
