Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury
Robert Bruce, 2nd Earl of Elgin, 1st Earl of Ailesbury , PC , FRS (born March 19, 1626 in London , † October 20, 1685 in Ampthill ) was a Scottish - English nobleman and politician .
Life
Bruce was the only son of Thomas Bruce, 1st Earl of Elgin , from his first marriage to Anne Chichester. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Bruce .
From 1660 he was, initially together with the Earl of Cleveland , from 1667 until his death, finally, alone Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire . As Knight of the Shire for Bedfordshire in 1660 and again from 1661 to 1663 MP in the English House of Commons and participated as such in the Convention Parliament and the Cavalier Parliament .
He inherited the title of nobility from his father when he died on December 21, 1663. As Scottish 2nd Earl of Elgin he became a member of the Scottish Parliament and as the English 2nd Baron Bruce , of Whorlton in the County of York, also a member of the English House of Lords , which is why he left the English House of Commons.
On March 18, 1664, he was rewarded for his mediation services during the English Restoration with the English title Earl of Ailesbury , in the County of Buckingham, along with the subordinate titles Viscount Bruce , of Ampthill in the County of Bedford, and Baron Bruce , of Skelton in the County of York. With these titles a seat in the English House of Lords was connected.
In October 1678 he was inducted into the Privy Council and a gentleman of the bedchamber . He was also Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and Hampshire from 1681 until his death. In 1685 he became a member of the Royal Society and on July 30th, Lord Chamberlain of the Household .
He died in 1685 at the age of 58 at Houghton House north of Ampthill in Bedfordshire and was buried in Maulden on October 26 of the same year . In 1686 his widow built nearby Ampthill House , originally as Dower House .
