Robert Burri

Robert Burri (born July 13, 1867 in Cham ; † May 16, 1952 in Bern ; resident in Bern and Malters ) was a Swiss bacteriologist .

Life

Robert Burri, born on July 13, 1867 in Cham as the son of the postman Jost and Maria Burri, first graduated from the Cantonal School in Zug before completing an apprenticeship as a natural science teacher at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich between 1886 and 1889 .

As a result, Burri was employed as an assistant at the agricultural research institute in Bonn from 1891 to 1895 . There he carried out the first bacteriological studies on the Rhine water , with which he obtained his doctorate in 1893 at the University of Zurich . Directly afterwards he worked as an assistant at the agricultural chemical research institute in Zurich from 1895 to 1899. From 1897 he taught as a private lecturer in agricultural bacteriology at the Zurich Polytechnic. To this end, he was appointed head of the newly created agricultural and bacteriological laboratory, which he held until 1907.

In addition, Robert Burri was appointed head of the Federal Dairy and Bacteriological Institute in Bern-Liebefeld in 1907. In addition, he was appointed President of the World Dairy Federation in 1945.

Robert Burri, father of the mineralogist Conrad Burri , married Emilie nee Walser in 1897. He died on May 16, 1952, two months before the age of 85 in Bern.

Act

Robert Burri is considered to be the pioneer in the field of milk and dairy bacteriology. He developed several scientific methods, such as the ink process for the microscopically controlled production of individual bacterial cultures, the smear process in the test tube for anaerobes and the anaerobic sealing of test tubes. In addition, published it also important work on bee diseases.
