Robert "Bobby" Dekeyser (born October 7, 1964 in Leuven ) is a Belgian entrepreneur and former football goalkeeper . After retiring as a footballer, he founded the furniture company DEDON in 1990 .

biography

Childhood and youth

Dekeyser was born in Leuven, Belgium, the eldest son of an entrepreneurial family. His parents divorced when he was very young. During his childhood he lived in Belgium, Austria ( Tamsweg ) and Germany . He attended a total of 13 different schools. At 14, he won a youth competition that secured him a place in the New York soccer school run by Brazilian striker Pelé .

Football career

Dekeyser played in his youth first with Oud-Heverlee Leuven in his birthplace and then up to the B-youth with Wormatia Worms . From 1980, at the age of 16, he was a member of the A-youth team at 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he was active until 1982. As an adult, he fulfilled his duty to serve in the Belgian armed forces and played from 1984 to 1986 for the second division Royale Union Saint-Gilloise . On the recommendation of Jean-Marie Pfaff , Bayern Munich goalkeeper , Dekeyser was signed in 1986 to replace Raimond Aumann , who had been injured for a long time . He played his only competitive game for Bayern on November 18, 1986 in the DFB Cup round of 16 in the 3-0 defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf . After a season without involvement in the game, he moved to the Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg , but could not prevail against goalkeeper Andreas Köpke and remained there without a commitment.

After a season with the Belgian first division club KRC Genk , Dekeyser moved in 1989 to the then third division TSV 1860 Munich , for whom he played as a regular goalkeeper. In his 16th game for the team, he was injured in the face in a fist defense by the elbow of another player and spent several weeks in the hospital. He then played three more second division games for 1860 Munich in August 1991.

Entrepreneurial career

Dekeyser founded DEDON , an outdoor furniture manufacturer based in Lüneburg and a sales network in over 80 countries, while he was still recovering from his facial injury in hospital. In 2012 he founded Dedon Island , a luxury hotel resort in the Philippines , which is now being run by his daughter Carolin Dekeyser under the new name NAY PALAD . At the end of 2016, Dekeyser sold the last 20 percent of its shares in DEDON from the Swiss Diethelm Keller Group, which had been the company's main shareholder since 2014.

In 2009 Dekeyser founded “Dekeyser & Friends”, a foundation based in Geneva and Berlin. In various projects around the world, the foundation brings people between the ages of 18 and 28 together with mentors to exchange ideas and gain experience and contacts for their own future. The foundation's largest and most extensive project since 2009 has been the “Compostela” village project in the Philippines. Compostela is a resettlement project in which around 500 people (mainly families) found a new home on the island of Cebu who had previously lived on a garbage dump.

Dekeyser's autobiography Unsellable was published in Germany in 2012. The proceeds from the book flow into his foundation.

Private

Dekeyser was married to his wife Ann-Kathrin since 1987, with whom he has three children. She died in September 2010. His son Yannick is known as a rapper under the pseudonym Estikay .
