Robert Ervin Coker

Robert Ervin Coker (born January 30, 1876 in Society Hill , South Carolina , †  October 2, 1967 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina ) was an American zoologist . He was considered an oyster expert and the founder of the North Carolina's fishing industry. He studied cladocera in the ancient North Carolina lakes and the effects of temperature on cyclomorphism . In 1906 he was invited to Peru to make recommendations for the protection of guano birds .

Coker graduated from the University of North Carolina and received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University . From 1922 until his retirement in 1947, he taught at the University of North Carolina. He then became director of the Institute for Fisheries Research.
