Robert Goebbels (born April 3, 1944 in Luxembourg City ) is a Luxembourg politician .

Act

After completing his training, Robert Goebbels worked as a journalist and was President of the Association luxembourgeoise des journalistes (ALJ) from 1972 to 1974 . From 1970 to 1975 he was General Secretary of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party ( LSAP ).

Between 1976 and 1984 and again from 2000 to 2005, Robert Goebbels was a member of the Luxembourg City Council. In 1984 he was appointed State Secretary for External Relations and State Secretary for Economy and Small Business in the government of Jacques Santer . In this role he signed the Schengen Agreement for Luxembourg .

From 1989 he was Minister for Economy, Transport and Public Works, and in 1995 , in the government of Jean-Claude Juncker , Minister for Public Works and Energy.

In the 1999 election, Robert Goebbels was elected deputy to the European Parliament , where he is Vice-President of the European Socialists and primarily deals with economic and financial dossiers. In 2004 and 2009 he was elected for a further mandate.

He no longer stood as a candidate for the 2014 European elections .

MEP

From 2009 to 2014 Goebbels was Deputy Chairman of the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations . He was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a deputy in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs , the Special Committee against Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering, and a delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly .

Honors

The municipality of Schengen has named a street after Robert Goebbels (CR152 along the Moselle from the Moselle bridge to the French border).
