Robert Murray Hill (born September 25, 1946 in Adelaide , South Australia ) is an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia .

Life

Hill, son of longtime MP and politician Murray Hill , began after school an undergraduate degree at Scotch College in Mitcham and in 1968 a law degree at St. Mark's College, University of Adelaide , which he then continued in 1970 at the University of London . On July 1, 1981 he became a member of the Australian Senate for the Liberal Party of Australia and represented the interests of South Australia in this until March 15, 2006 . In 1982 he completed his studies in Asian history and politics at the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Asian History and Politics). During his Senate membership, he was in 1990 successor to Fred Chaney as chairman of the faction of the Liberal Party (Leader of the Liberal Party in the Senate) and held this position until his replacement by Nick Minchin of 2006.

On March 11, 1996, Hill took over the post of Minister for the Environment in the first cabinet of Prime Minister John Howard . As part of a government reshuffle, he became Minister for the Environment and Heritage in the second Howard cabinet on October 21, 1998 . After the Liberal Party's victory in the November 10, 2001 parliamentary elections, he succeeded Peter Reith as Minister of Defense in Howard's third cabinet , which was presented on November 26, 2001. On January 20, 2006 he resigned as Secretary of Defense, whereupon the previous Minister of Education, Science and Training Brendan Nelson was his successor in the fourth Howard Cabinet on January 24, 2006.

After his resignation from the Senate Hill replaced Caroline Millar as Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations in New York City on March 27, 2006 and remained in this position until he was replaced by Gary Quinlan in May 2009. On July 26, 2010 he took over he took over from John von Doussa as Chancellor of the University of Adelaide and held this office until his replacement by Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce on July 25, 2014.

Hill is married to psychologist Diana Jacka Hill and has four children, including actor, writer and producer Victoria Hill.
