from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Lebel (born January 5, 1901 in Paris ; † February 28, 1986 ibid) was a French art and literary critic and author.

Life

Lebel was not only a recognized art critic, but was also seen as an intelligent art collector.

During the Western Campaign ( World War II ), Lebel fled to the USA with his wife Nina and son Jean-Jacques and lived in Greenwich Village ( New York ) between 1940 and 1944 . They were André Breton's neighbors and many artists met here, such as B. the painters Max Ernst and Roberto Matta or the authors Georges Duthuit and Claude Lévi-Strauss . The gallery owner Julius Carlebach , who was one of the first to specialize in North American tribal art with his gallery ( Third Avenue ) , was also a frequent guest.

At the end of the war, Lebel returned to Paris with his family and settled in the 7th arrondissement . As in the USA, he wrote about modern art and became a pioneer of "Art Nouveau". He wrote notable biographies about Marcel Duchamp , Max Ernst, Jacques Lacan and Claude Lévi-Strauss .

Robert Lebel died at the age of 82 on February 28, 1986 in Paris, where he found his final resting place. Initiated by his son Jean-Jacques, the Robert Lebel art collection was dissolved through several auctions in December 2006.
