Robert Renato Schmidt

Robert (called Renato) Wilhelm Friedrich Schmidt (born June 13, 1892 in Elberfeld , † August 27, 1948 in Lugano ) was a German publisher and writer .

Life

Schmidt, the only son of Robert Emanuel Schmidt , the chemist and later director of IG Farben , enrolled at Heidelberg University in 1911 . After a poem published in the magazine light and shadow , he was author of von Hermann master led Saturn publishing house . As a friend and financial supporter of Paul Zech, he played a key role in the expressionist bibliophile magazine Das neue Pathos .

On December 17, 1925, he registered the Merlin publishing house in Heidelberg. Herbert Grossberger , a childhood friend of Hermann Meister and also an author and graphic artist for Saturn Verlag, became the head of the newly founded company . The first books published by Alfred Kubin were works by Schmidt and Salomo Friedlaender .

In 1928 a private and business move to Baden-Baden took place. One of the main authors of the publishing house was now Otto Rombach ; as a book designer his brother Hermann Rombach was won. Publishing activities ended in 1932; numerous books were banned by the National Socialists since 1933.

A drug addiction has been guaranteed by RR Schmidt since the 1930s. a. in the University Hospital Burghözli sought to cure in Switzerland, where his parents lived until her death in 1938. Schmidt did not return to Germany and died in Lugano in 1948. He had his library auctioned in Zurich in 1942; nothing is known about the fate of his extensive collection of Kubin's works.

Schmidt was married twice; a son from his first marriage died on February 15, 1950 in Baden-Baden. His estate cannot be found.
