Robert Schaffner (born June 24, 1905 in Echternach , † August 12, 1979 in Locarno , Switzerland ) was a Luxembourg politician ( DP ) and association official .

Life

Robert Schaffner, a trained master locksmith, was the son of Mathias Schaffner (1869-1940), who was mayor of Echternach from 1924 to 1940 and a member of the Rietspartei (Parti de la Droite / Right-wing Party), and his wife Sophie Diedeling. Robert Schaffner's daughter Mady (* 1934) was mayor of the city from 1994 to 1998. She handed over the office to Jos Massard .

Robert Schaffner was active in the scout movement since the 1930s and was therefore persecuted by the Gestapo during the German occupation of Luxembourg .

In 1945 he was a founding member of the Groupement Patriotique et Démocratique (GPD), from which the DP emerged in 1955. In 1945 he was elected to the Chambre des Députés for the canton of Echternach , where he served as a member of parliament until his death. From 1945 to 1947 he was also mayor of Echternach for the first time. From 1947 to 1951 he was Minister of Labor and Transport in Pierre Dupong's cabinet . On his initiative, the Luxembourg Airlines Company was founded in 1948 , which was restructured to Luxair in 1961 . In the cabinet of Pierre Werner ( CSV ) he was a second time Minister for Labor and Sport from 1959 to 1964. Despite financial bottlenecks, the construction of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge was considered at this time . From 1970 to 1979 he was again mayor in Echternach.

Other offices

In Echternach, Schaffner was involved in the local beautification association, where he was also vice-president and acting president from 1963 to 1964. From 1950 to 1978 he was General Commissioner of the Fédération Nationale des Eclaireurs et Eclaireuses du Luxembourg (FNEL). He was also a founding member of the International Metal Union (IMU) and was its first president from 1954 to 1966. He was also founding president of the Lions Club Echternach in 1965 .

Honors

A roundabout on Nationalstrasse 2 and the Chalet Robert Schaffner, inaugurated in 1984 in the Echternach scout camp, are named after him.
