The European Metal Union (EMU) is the European umbrella organization of the national interest and SME associations of the metal trade . In turn, the EMU is a member of UEAPME (European Union of Crafts and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises). The main purpose of the association is to represent and represent the interests of its members on a European level.

history

The association was originally founded in 1954 in Zurich as the Internationale Metall-Union (IMU) ( French : Union Internationale du Métal ). Early members in 1975 included the Belgian , German , French , Luxembourg , Dutch , Austrian , Swedish and Swiss interest groups, which together represented 70,000 companies and 400,000 employees at the time. Until the name change, the IMU was based in Zurich.

The organization has had its current name since 1993 after the European Community was established. The headquarters moved to Nieuwegein . According to the list of interest groups of the European Commission, member associations at national level in 1996 were Navemetaal (Belgium), the Bundesverband Metall (Germany), the FECM (Luxembourg), the Koninklijke Metaalunie (Netherlands), the Federal Guild of Locksmiths, Agricultural Machinery Technicians and Blacksmiths (Austria) and the Swiss Metal Union (SMU).

In a lecture given by the EMU in November 2013, the interim representation of Austrian interests by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce , which hosted the EMU delegate assembly in 2013, is mentioned. At that time, Swiss interests were already represented by two associations; Swissmechanic was added to the Swiss Metal Union . At this point in time Belgium was already represented by VLAMEF, Denmark by DS Håndværk & Industri and Hungary by IPOSZ-OFI. At that time, Germany and the Netherlands had other national interest groups in the EMU. In 2013 the EMU represented 70,000 companies, 800,000 employees and 70,000 trainees. Italy is also represented by a delegation at the regularly held congresses .
