Robert T. Moeller

Robert T. Moeller (born February 24, 1951 in New Jersey , † March 28, 2011 in Washington, DC ) was a Vice Admiral in the US Navy . From August 2007 until his retirement in April 2010, he was the deputy commander for military operations of the US Africa Command under William E. Ward and had previously led the reconstruction command group of the newly established US regional command as executive director since February 2007 .

Military career

Moeller graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and received his officer license as Ensign after graduating from the Reserve Officer Training Corps program . He was then trained as an officer in surface warfare and served in a variety of roles.

At sea he was deployed as follows: on the USS Albany he served as a Talos gun officer ; Combat Systems and Materials Officer on the staff of the Commander of Destroyer Squadron Thirty Six ; USS Valley Forge as Recommissioning Engineer Officer ; USS Belknap as Executive Officer (XO) and later as Commanding Officer (CO); USS Port Royal as commanding officer. During his command of the USS Belknap , he participated in the Provide Comfort and Deny Flight operations. On land, Moeller u. a. as commander of the Surface Warfare Officers School .

In 1989, Moeller was selected for the Navy Federal Executive Scholarship at the Brookings Institution . He also earned a Masters of Arts in National Security Studies from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University . From May 2001 to August 2003, Moeller served as assistant chief of staff for operations, planning, guidance and training and as director of operations (J-3) on the staff of the US Pacific Fleet commander . Moeller then served from August 2003 to August 2004 as the commander of the Cruiser Destroyer Group One and at the same time as the commander of the aircraft carrier combat group of the USS Ronald Reagan . After this command, he took over the post of Director of Strategy , Planning and Policies (J-5) of the US Central Command in August 2004 . He held this post until July 2006. Then he took over the post of Special Assistant to the Commander of the US Central Command , under General John Abizaid .

In February 2007, the United States Department of Defense published plans to establish a new regional US Unified Combatant Command for the African continent . From February to August 2007, Moeller was executive director of the US Africa Command's construction command group (AFRICOM), which operated under the US European Command in the Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart . In August Moeller was promoted to Vice Admiral and the post of Deputy Commanding Officer for AFRICOM military operations under William E. Ward .

His awards include a. the Defense Superior Service Medal , the Legion of Merit with two gold stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal , the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star.
