Robert Whymant

Robert Whymant (born November 29, 1944 in Luton , Bedfordshire , † December 26, 2004 in Galle , Sri Lanka ) was a British journalist and author .

Life

Whymant studied Oriental Studies at Magdalene College , Cambridge . At the end of the 1960s he first traveled to Japan , where he initially worked as an English teacher.

From 1972 to 2002 he reported as Japan correspondent for publications such as The Guardian , The Daily Telegraph and The Times from Tokyo. Occasionally Whymant reported from other Asian countries, including after the Tian'anmen massacre in 1989 in China.

For more than 20 years he researched a major biography of the German spy Richard Sorge , gaining extensive access to KGB documents in addition to Japanese and German sources . The work Stalin's Spy: Richard Sorge And The Tokyo Ring was published in 1996, the German version Richard Sorge: The man with the three faces followed in 1999 in a translation by Thomas Bertram.

After leaving the Times in 2002, he also wrote for the Australian magazine The Courier-Mail and taught at Waseda University in Tokyo . He was planning another book about his time as a correspondent in Japan.

In December 2004, Whymant and his wife Minako were vacationing in Sri Lanka when the tsunami struck the island after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . The couple went swimming early in the morning and were hit by the wave on the beach. While Whymant's wife survived, he could not be recovered dead from the sea until five days later.
