Robert Wilensky (born March 26, 1951 in Brooklyn , † March 15, 2013 in Oakland (California) ) was an American computer scientist who was an expert in artificial intelligence .

Career

Wilensky studied mathematics and computer science at Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and a doctorate in 1978 with Roger Schank ( Understanding Goal-Based Stories ). He then went to the University of California, Berkeley as a professor , where he headed the computer science faculty from 1993. He was one of the founders of the I-School (School of Information) in Berkeley. He was head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Project and the Cognitive Science Program in Berkeley.

He dealt in particular with the processing of natural language in computers, knowledge representation and planning and techniques of information representation in computer networks - for example, he was involved in the development of the Digital Library of the University of California in the early days of the World Wide Web, including the integration of information different sources and forms of representation (videos, photos, databases, reports, maps, etc.) on different levels was necessary. It was started in 1994. Most recently he dealt with, among other things, reliable valuation methods at online auction houses such as Ebay. With Robert E. Kahn he developed the basics of the handle system .

He was a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the American Association for Artificial Intelligence.

The research of his group in Berkeley in the early 1980s (Natural Language Processing) was described in the book Im Herz des Verstandes by Frank Rose (rororo 1986, English original 1984).

Peter Norvig is one of his PhD students .
