Robert William Porter (born August 13, 1926 in Monmouth , Illinois , † November 6, 1991 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Life

Porter served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 . He then studied at Monmouth College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 . At the Law School of the University of Michigan , he received a Juris Doctor in 1952 .

After working for an insurance company in Dallas from 1952 to 1954, he practiced as a lawyer in Dallas from 1954 to 1974 . During this time Porter was also active politically. He was a member of the Richardson , Texas city ​​council from 1961 to 1966 and served as the city's mayor from 1966 to 1967.

On April 22, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon nominated him to serve as a judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas to fill the vacant seat of Judge Leo Brewster . On June 13, 1974, he was confirmed by the United States Senate. He was sworn in on June 20. From 1986 to 1989 he was the chief judge of this district. On January 17, 1990, Porter changed to senior status due to health restrictions and thus went into semi-retirement. His vacant seat has been filled with Jorge Antonio Solis.
