NGC 1599 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is an estimated 178 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 1607 , NGC 1609 , NGC 1606 , IC 373 are located in the same area of the sky .
The Type-IIn supernova SN 2005aq was observed here.
The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on December 14, 1881 .
