NGC 1596 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Dorado (swordfish) in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 60 million light-years from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of about 75,000 ly. Together with NGC 1602 , it forms a bound pair.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 5, 1834 .
