NGC 1584 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 397 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across . Gravitational binding with NGC 1583 is possible .
The object was discovered by Francis Leavenworth on October 17, 1885 .
