NGC 1603 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 219 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across .
The galaxies NGC 1600 , NGC 1601 , NGC 1604 , NGC 1606 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by George Johnstone Stoney on January 14, 1849 .
