NGC 1591 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 178 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 1592 is located in the same area of the sky .
The type IIb supernova SN 2008V was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 6, 1834 .
