Monmouth is 40 ° 54'42 "north latitude and 90 ° 38'40" west longitude. The city extends over 10.5 km², which is spread over 10.2 km² of land and 0.3 km² of water.
Monmouth is 16 miles east of the Mississippi River , which forms the border with Iowa . The neighboring town of Galesburg , the administrative seat of Knox County , is 16 miles to the east.
The north-south US Highway 67 , the east-west US Highway 34 and the Illinois State Route 164 meet in Monmouth . A railway line also runs through the city.
Monmouth is 71.4 km north to the Quad Cities , 319 km east-northeast to Chicago , Illinois' capital Springfield is 195 km south-southeast, St. Louis , Missouri 297 km south and Iowas Capital Des Moines 312 km to the west.

In the 2000 census, the population was 9,841. These were distributed to 3,688 households in 2,323 families. The population density was 961.0 / km². There were 3,989 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 389.6 / km².
The population in 2000 was 92.7% white , 2.8% African American , 0.2% American Indian , 0.5% Asian and 2.1% other. 1.7% stated that they descended from at least two of these groups. 4.3% of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups. This figure only includes the official residents, there is also a high number of unreported cases due to illegal immigrants from Latin America who work on the farmland in the vicinity of the city.
