Robert Wyss (graphic designer)

Robert "Röbi" Wyss (born July 10, 1925 in Lucerne ; † February 15, 2004 in Adligenswil ) was a Swiss wood cutter , illustrator , draftsman , graphic artist and painter .

Life

Röbi Wyss attended the Lucerne School of Applied Arts as a student of Max von Moos . At the end of the 1940s he went to Paris to attend the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . From 1953 Wyss worked as a freelance graphic designer. He was one of the best-known woodcut artists in Switzerland of the 20th century and from 1970 presided over the Switzerland section of the international woodcutter association XYLON ; he gave up the office only in 1991.

In his early work, Wyss primarily focused on people and “actors in human comedy”. In the 1970s he became increasingly concerned with abstract landscapes. He discovered color printing for himself late. As a graphic artist and illustrator, he illustrated newspapers, literary works and school books, such as those of the Benziger Verlag and the Goldauer Conference . Wyss has received several awards for his work. In 1957, Wyss received the recognition award from the City of Lucerne's Art and Culture Prize .

Exhibitions

Wyss exhibited at many solo exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, such as the special exhibition at the Lucerne Art Museum in late autumn 1976. In 1998, the Engelberg Valley Museum honored Wyss with a comprehensive retrospective of the woodcut work.
