Roberto Sacasa Sarria (born February 27, 1840 in Chinandega , † July 2, 1896 in Managua ) was President of Nicaragua from August 5, 1889 to January 1, 1891 and from March 1, 1891 to May 31, 1893 . He had previously served as Vice President from 1887 to 1889.

Life

He was married to his cousin Ángela Sacasa Cuadra. His son Juan Bautista Sacasa later also became President of Nicaragua. He also had two daughters.

Roberto Sacasa Sarria was a member of the Partido Republicano , which ruled Nicaragua for 35 years. Within the Partido Republicano , the current of the Progresistas fought the current of the Iglesieros . On April 28, 1893, the commander of the Garrison of Granada (Nicaragua) , Eduardo Montiel of the Partido Conservador , rebelled against President Roberto Sacaza, also of the Partido Conservador. Joaquín Zavala Solís agreed to support the uprising. The insurgents received support from General José Santos Zelaya of the Partido Liberal . The Catholic Church and his family supported Roberto Sacaza. The insurgents occupied Masaya and moved towards Managua. At La Barranca, the insurgents defeated the government troops. The US ambassador Lewis Baker offered to mediate.

Sacasa agreed in the Pacto de Sabana Grande of May 31, 1893 ready to hand over power to a junta of five people, two of whom were to be determined by him and three by the insurgents. The junta was to rule until a constituent assembly was called - that is, for four months. One of those appointed by José Santos Zelaya was Salvador Machado Aguero, who presided over the junta.
