Roberts Blossom

Roberts Scott Blossom (born March 25, 1924 in New Haven , Connecticut - † July 8, 2011 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actor and poet .

Life

Roberts Blossom graduated from Asheville School, North Carolina, in 1941 and then studied at Harvard University , which he left after a year to serve in the US Army in Europe during World War II . He trained as a therapist after the war ended , but then decided to become an actor. He began directing and appearing in productions at Karamu House and Candlelight Theater in Cleveland , but later moved to New York City , where he made a living tying hat feathers and practicing a controversial therapy called Dianetics . He was also a waiter for a while until he finally became a full-time actor.

Career

He played a few theater roles in the 1950s, for which he received the Obie Award four times . He played his first film role in the television adaptation of the play Our Town from 1959.

In the thriller Obsessed (1974), Blossom played the lead role of the killer Ezra Cobb . In the two Academy Award-winning drama The Great Gatsby (1974), he starred alongside Robert Redford . For the role of a villain in the television series Another World , which he played from 1976 to 1977, he won the Soapy Award in 1978 . In 1983, Blossom starred in the horror film Christine , a film directed by John Carpenter , which is an adaptation of the book by Stephen King . He is also known from the film Kevin Alone at Home (1990), where he played the mysterious neighbor "Old Man Marley". In the 1991 comedy Doc Hollywood , he played the judge Evans , who played Dr. Benjamin Stone (played by Michael J. Fox ) was sentenced to community service, which kept him in a provincial nest for a long time.

In the 1990s, Blossom gave up his acting career and became a poet.

He died in Santa Monica on July 8, 2011 at the age of 87.
