The Rochester & Southern Railroad ( AAR reporting as mark: RSR) is an American class 3 local railroad - railway company in the northwest of the State of New York . The subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. owns railway lines with a total length of 105 km and operates rail freight transport on them .

history

In the mid-1980s, the railway companies , which were merged in CSX Transportation and still operating as the Chessie System , sold several underused branch lines. The locally based Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) agreed in 1985 with CSX or its subsidiary Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to take over the 165 km (103 mile) long B&O Rochester branch . This is an approximately 150 km long stretch of the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway (BR&P) acquired by B&O in 1932 from the greater Rochester area southwest via Caledonia to Ashford in Cattaraugus County with branches in Rochester. In Rochester, Silver Springs and Machias (Cattaraugus County) there was a transition to Conrail , in Ashford to CSX. For its new acquisition, G&W founded a subsidiary, Rochester & Southern Railroad (RSR). The operator change from CSX to RSR took place on July 21, 1986.

Part of the transaction initially also included 20 km of RSR trackage rights on CSX infrastructure from Ashland to Salamanca , where the freight wagons were exchanged for CSX. However, this section was also sold to G&W on July 19, 1988 with the entire CSX / B & O route from Buffalo to Eidenau ( Butler County ) near Pittsburgh and transferred to the new G&W company Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad (BPRR).

While the RSR was able to keep and win freight customers on the northern half of its infrastructure, there were hardly any locally based customers on the southwest section. The section between Silver Springs ( Wyoming County ) and Machias was therefore taken out of service in 1990. On June 1, 1998, the RSR also applied to the responsible supervisory authority STB for the decommissioning of the 16.8 km long Machias – Ashford section, which is no longer connected to the rest of the RSR line, and is not in use . However, the request was denied. After the Conrail connection between Buffalo and Machias came to the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) in 1999 , the BPRR began to run its trains on the basis of trackage rights already in place during the Conrail times over this route and the subsequent RSR section, while its own parallel Connection Buffalo Ashford via Springville was largely abandoned. G&W now runs the Machias – Ashford route as part of the BPRR.

In 2003, the RSR took over the operation of the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad (GNWR), which also belongs to the G&W group of companies, with its rail link from Caledonia to Dansville .

Infrastructure

Map of the current route network of the Rochester & Southern Railroad and the neighboring LAL , broken down by predecessor companies

The starting point of the RSR freight trains in Rochester is mostly Brooks Avenue Yard in the southwest of the city. There are two connections to the Water Level Route of the former New York Central Railroad : A connection in the city center to the Rochester Subdivision and one in the train station and the hamlet of the same name, Genesee Junction on the West Shore Subdivision . The exchange of cars with the current operator of the Water Level Route, CSX Transportation, takes place primarily in Genesee Junction. Only since the takeover of the Water Level Route operated by Conrail by CSX on June 1, 1999, the RSR and the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad (LAL) have also been allowed to exchange freight wagons there, after the LAL trackage rights were granted within the CSX station .

The RSR routes branch north of Brooks Avenue Yard: the so-called Belt Line runs past the city center to neighboring Greece , while the Lincoln Park Line runs about four kilometers east. Until 1996 a connection from the Lincoln Park Line to as was siding used part of 1956 set for passenger subway of Rochester.

From Brooks Avenue Yard to the southwest, the main line of the RSR runs 76 km via Caledonia and Warsaw to Silver Springs. There is a link to the Southern Tier Line , which has been operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) since the Conrail division in 1999, but is also used by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). The RSR exchanges freight cars with both railroad companies in Silver Springs and also has haulage rights on the Southern Tier Line from Silver Springs to Buffalo to reach the BPRR and Canadian National .

The Genesee and Wyoming Railroad (G&W) route branches off the RSR main line at P&L Junction in Caledonia and leads to Dansville via Retsof , Mount Morris and Groveland . While the section from Caledonia to Greigsville near Retsof was built from 1899 by the GNWR or its direct predecessor company, the section from Greigsville to Groveland is a section of the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad , which came to Conrail in 1976 and to the GNWR in 1985 . The subsequent 12.5 km long piece to Dansville is the remaining part of the Dansville and Mount Morris Railroad (DMM).

traffic

The freight traffic of the RSR mainly comprises the transport of salt, steel products and scrap, building materials, chemicals, petroleum products, paper, wood and agricultural products. In addition to sidings in Rochester, the most important customers include the salt mines in Retsof (until 1995) and Mount Morris (Hampton Corners; from 2001). Besides sidings their own loading tracks (are team tracks / Trans Load) served.

Twelve diesel locomotives of the types EMD GP9 , EMD GP38 , EMD GP40 , EMD SW1001 and EMD MP15DC were available for the transport of the RSR 2010 including the vehicles taken over from the GNWR .
