The actor Taron Egerton , who embodies the British singer, composer and pianist Elton John in Rocketman , reinterpreted his songs for the film and sang them himself, including rather unknown songs by John, such as the Border Song from 1970, that of loneliness and alienation is and show what great copywriters his musical husband Bernie Taupin was already the age of 20, says Ulf Kubanke of laut.de . For the brand new exclusive track (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again , John turns up in person for a cameo duet.

reception

Taron Egerton in March 2018

Jennifer Ullrich from Moviepilot writes that Taron Egerton is not trying desperately to copy the extroverted icon Elton John , but is putting his own stamp on the songs, which means that you can rediscover the pieces on the big screen.

Ulf Kubanke from laut.de thinks that Egerton balances comfortably on a fine dividing line between embodiment and his own identity: "On the one hand, his presentation goes as far as Elton-John-esker emphasis on individual words and syllables, although he does not have Sir Elton's masculine power in the timbre which despite all queerness is one of his trademarks. " It is precisely at this point that Egerton is doing everything right, leaving the path of absolute imitation and indulging in the necessary little bit of your own interpretation, says Kubanke. He succeeds particularly vividly in such accents in ballad-like tracks as Your Song or Tiny Dancer from the grandiose early work Madman Across the Water from 1971. On Egerton's interpretation of Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word from the double album Blue Moves from 1976, which is due to Kubanke remarks: "Egerton and his team can't hold a candle to the rousing original version. All the more clever how the actor creates a theatrical monologue that is anything but anything between piano and strings In the end, this soundtrack turns out to be the perfect appetizer to immerse yourself in Elton John's extensive oeuvre or to rediscover it. "

The German Film and Media Assessment gave the film the rating of particularly valuable . The jury's statement said: “All private scenes [...] were combined in musical form with his [Elton John's] songs and a brilliant choreography. Dramaturgically perfect, the songs transport the plot decisively and maintain the tension. "
