Roderick Edwards

Roderick Yerkes Edwards (born 1909 in Philadelphia , † April 3, 1987 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American Rear Admiral in the United States Coast Guard .

Education and professional career

Edwards received his university education between 1927 and 1940 at Rutgers University and the Teachers College of Columbia University . After graduating, he joined the United States Merchant Navy . During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard in Great Britain . In this position he was involved in building up the sea ​​rescue forces required for D-Day . In the further course of the war he took part in Operation to Liberate the Port of Antwerp . After the war he was transferred to the United States Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, DC . In addition to various posts there, he also worked in San Francisco . In 1967 he was promoted to rear admiral and took over the management of the department for public relations and international cooperation. As head of this department, he represented the United States at several international law conferences. For example, as a member of the American delegation, he attended meetings of the International Maritime Organization and chaired the Council of the Organization for four consecutive terms. In 1971 the United States Coast Guard put him into retirement. However, he continued to be active at the international level. In 1975 he took part in the conference to draft the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and in 1979 the member states of the International Maritime Organization elected him chairman of the organization's general assembly. He was also an advisor to the President of the American Institute of Merchant Shipping .

Edwards was married to Rita Thiele. He had two sons with her and was a grandfather of two. He died on April 3, 1987 in the National Naval Medical Center in kidney failure .
