Roger David Blandford (born August 28, 1949 in Grantham , England ) is a British astronomer and astrophysicist .

Blandford received his PhD from Cambridge University in 1974 and was Professor at the California Institute of Technology from 1976 to 2003 . In 1980 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ). Since 2003 he has been Professor at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Stanford University and Director of the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology . His work focuses on cosmology , the astrophysics of black holes and gravitational lenses .

Together with Roman Znajek, he discovered the Blandford-Znajek process for generating energy from a black hole . The Blandford-Payne trial is also named after him.
