Roger Hallam (born May 1966 ) is a British environmental activist . He is a co-founder of the Extinction Rebellion climate movement .

Life

Hallam worked as a farmer in Wales , but he said he was forced to give up his organic farm due to extreme weather events . In the first half of 2019 he was working on a doctoral thesis at King's College London on the subject of civil disobedience .

Hallam co-founded Extinction Rebellion in autumn 2018, which he justified as follows: "We have a choice: Either we surrender to death or we rebel to get the political elites to maximize our chances of survival." On September 12, 2019, he was arrested in front of a café in London in connection with the planned "Heathrow Break" action to shut down London Airport, which was due to begin the following day. With several “pilots” the activists wanted to let drones soar near the runways so that air traffic had to be interrupted.

Hallam stated, “I am ready to go to jail. We are facing the greatest catastrophe in human history. Other forms of protest have not been able to stop this in the past 30 years. That is why we need massive civil disobedience. "

criticism

On November 20, 2019, excerpts from an interview with Hallam during the period in which he relativized the Holocaust and denied its singularity were published. Hallam said that genocide had occurred over and over again in the last 500 years of human history, described the Holocaust as an "almost normal event" and referred to the atrocities of the Congo and genocides in China , among other things . Shortly after the interview was published, Extinction Rebellion Germany and several German local groups publicly distanced themselves from Hallam on Twitter . Die Zeit then reported that Ullstein Buchverlag is stopping the delivery of its book "Common Sense" with immediate effect.
